Clay Artistry with Bill & Athena Steen


Friland – Denmark, 20th–24th August, 2011

This workshop is an intensive 5 day workshop with focus on clay decoration techniques, earthen floors, and finishing techniques.

Workshop participants can choose to focus on one or more of the following elements:

Clay plastering – how to mix and apply plasters, different recipes & layers, with a focus on the finishes

Earthen floors – different recipes including Japanese ‘tataki’

Cob furniture – building simple furniture from willow, clay, sand and straw

Decoration techniques – including fresco and sgraffito.


Time ~ starts @ 09.00 on Saturday the 20th of  August, finishes @ 17.00 on Wednesday the 24th

Cost ~ €500 / Dkk 3750. This fee includes all tuition, meals, and basic accommodation.

Bill and Athena Steen have more than 20 years of experience in education,  straw bale building and earthen plasters. They are also prolific writers and have published a number of books about straw bale and natural building, They have been invited to Europe to teach their expertise in running workshops, artistic plastering techniques and earthen floors and to share their theoretical and practical knowledge in all things to do with natural building.
